Michigan-based artist Terrence Campagna collects things – discarded paper, fast food containers, scrap wood – during his “field trips” which are short walks or multi-day treks out across the landscape of the Midwest. Bringing his finds back to the studio he pieces them together into beautiful constructions.

Living in poverty, Racine artist Phil Schultz often uses materials scavenged from recycling bins and trashcans. Over the past thirty years Schultz has produced a vast body of work including bronze cast and welded steel sculptures and expressive abstract paintings. Making a habit of writing every day, Schultz has authored nearly thirty thousand sonnets also represented in the exhibition.

“Life on Lake Michigan: Photographs from the Early 1900s” features photographs printed from digital scans of antique dry plate glass negatives held in the UW-Parkside Archives documenting Kenosha and Racine counties and surrounding areas. The dry plate glass negatives, like the one on display here, date to the late 1800s and early 1900s, while the digital photographs shown in this exhibition were printed on campus this spring.

What is a Dry Plate glass negative?

The Dry Plate process was first invented in 1871. It replaced a messy and time-sensitive process that required the application of wet chemicals (wet collodion) to a glass plate minutes before a photograph was taken. This means that before the Dry Plate process, a photographer could not take a photograph without having a “dark room” to create a light sensitive “Wet Plate” for use in his or her camera. The Dry Plate process made photography much easier because the light-sensitive silver gelatin emulsion was applied and allowed to dry on the plate before it was used by a photographer. A photographer could simply carry dry plates and load them into a camera to take a photograph. By the 1880s factory-made silver gelatin dry plates were widely available, and this brought photography to a wide audience of amateur practitioners. Glass plate photography began to decline when flexible roll film was invented and it virtually disappeared by the mid-1920s, replaced by George Eastman Kodak cameras that used only flexible roll film.

FEATURED ARTIST: John Porcellino and Tyler Page

“John Porcellino was born in Chicago, in 1968, and has been writing, drawing, and publishing minicomics, comics, and graphic novels for over twenty-five years. His celebrated self-published series King-Cat Comics, begun in 1989, has inspired a generation of cartoonists. According to artist Chris Ware, ‘John Porcellino’s comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive.” In this show Porcellino’s entire books Thoreau at Walden is printed out for viewers to read.

“Tyler Page is an Eisner-nominated artist and educator based in Minneapolis. In 2007 he received a Xeric Foundation grant to self-publish volume one of his webcomic, Nothing Better. He has created and self-published several of his own books in addition to maintaining an active freelance career. Tyler is also the Director of Print Technology Services at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design.”
